The European Court of Justice ruled on 22.11.2022 that the right for anyone to inspect the UBO register violates the right to privacy. This decision also has implications for access to the UBO register in Belgium and Germany. In Belgium, the laws and regulations have since been amended and in Germany, the existing rules are being interpreted in line with European law. Apart from public authorities, the UBO registers are now only accessible to natural persons and legal entities with a legitimate interest.
